Thunderstorms and lightning events pose a significant environmental risk for wind energy. Modern wind turbines are generally equipped with effective lightning protection systems and are safe. Nevertheless, lightning events can cause damage which, if undetected, can lead to major consequential damage.
The aim of the collaboration is to support all phases in the life of a wind farm - from evaluation, construction, operation and maintenance through to repowering - with proactive lightning protection risk management.
